i really really really dislike making travel plans. it's bad enough when things go as planned, but terribly worse when they go bad. case in point: my summer plans. ideally, i wanted to ferry to prince rupert, b.c. and drive down to portland for the month of june to visit friends & family, then snag any free friends for a roadtrip back to ketch. that way, i'd have my car with me (an issue i had last summer) and would be relatively free to do as i pleased. the plan was to stay with my cousin at her apartment in the pdx-metro area; since she is family i felt i could impose for a longer time period than with friends. i also got an old friend to book a week in pdx with me & stay of course with my cousin & i. travel arrangements went relatively well--the only problem was the ridiculously expensive ferry tickets which changed my itinerary to be a ferry to bellingham, wa (2 days on the ferry vs. 2.5 days' drive through nowhere, canada). last week, it was all good to go. then my cousin decided to quit her job, so she likely won't be in her apt in june. craaaaaaaaap...
i spent all sunday night stressing out & texting/calling my high school friend to make him aware of the change in plans & try to find a new place to stay...my other friends in the area all seem to have tiny apts so it'd be hard to stay with them, even short-term. hotel prices were ridiculous, especially for 3 weeks that i was planning on being down there. i finally came across an oregon hostel site, which sounds pretty decent actually. only $22-25/night, which is do-able for a week, despite that i don't want to spend any more $$ than i have to ($1000+ for the ferry tickets alone STILL makes me cringe). i'm still debating about just cancelling my ferry tix & flying down for the 6 days that david will be there, maybe renting a car for a day or two (since those are pricey also), but right now the only changes i've made are to be south only 2 wks instead of 3. i'm waiting to hear back from a college friend/roommate about putting us up for that time, and if not i'll try to track down a few other friends that i'm closer with to see if they'll take pity on us. fingers crossed it works out, because i want to go on vacation but not worry about!! plus, i need to stock up on yarn for my ever-growing etsy shop...have gotten a little bit of interest lately, still no sales, but i remain hopeful that i can turn my hobby into a bit of revenue!
on a sad note, my favorite student teacher (the cute, goofy guy that winks) is apparently moving out of town for a teaching job next year...no idea when he's leaving or where to, but he hasn't been at school for 2 wks now which is just no fun. i swear, the hallway seems a little more ho-hum without his passion, enthusiasm and humor around.... hopefully he'll be back soon.
as a nod to the very pleasant distraction he's provided this academic year, may i present barry louis polisar singing "all i want is you" as featured on the juno soundtrack...
