Top 5 Annoying Songs of the 90's
the seattle-based show, evening magazine, did an episode on the 90's that was aired last night...part of their music segment included the top 5 most annoying songs of the 90's, which i thought would be fun to see. after hearing the list, however, i kind of got a shock of reality! here's the list:
5) Lou Bega, "Mambo No. 5"
4) Chumbawamba, "Tubthumping"
3) Billy Ray Cyrus, "Achy Breaky Heart"
2) Los Del Rio, "Macarena"
1) Aqua, "Barbie Girl"
what struck me as i went through the list of annoying songs from the 90's is, i listened to all of those songs! frequently! i liked most of them! (i'm going to mentally exclude the Billy Ray song; it has a family story attached to it that just makes the song horrible & is embarrassing for all involved.) and what knocked me for a loop most of all is--I'VE OFFICIALLY BECOME OLD ENOUGH FOR MY "ERA" TO BE REMINISCED ABOUT. what i mean by that is, i grew up in the 90's. i was in elementary and middle school then. sure, the early 90's don't mean a whole lot to me because i was like 5 and could care less, but the late 90's was MY time. and now it's been so long since then that they're starting to make tv shows about it highlighting all the culture, news, and icons that used to be sooo important to us but nowadays we could care less...and if the 90's are so old that it's cool to talk about that decade again, that means that I'M that old! so while it was good to be reminded of some catchy "ear-worm" tunes like Mambo No. 5 (which will forever have a special place in my heart since we danced the "mambo" to it in Japan) and Tubthumping, i was saddened to be reminded of my age...granted i'm still young and have no right to complain compared to older generations, but it really makes you think how long it's been since i tried to act cool and not dance like an idiot on the gym floor of schoenbar middle school while singing very badly along with songs like Mandy Moore's "Candy" or the croonings of Britney Spears. we ran laps in p.e. class to Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" for pete's sake. but no matter how many years have passed and how old i get, N'Sync will always have my heart...go 90's!
